Iowa State University Animal Industry Report 2011 Environmental Conditions in Beef Deep - Bedded Mono - Slope Facilities

چکیده
and Implications Ammonia (NH3), temperature, moisture content, pH, pack depth, nutrient composition and concentration of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOC) were measured at 56 locations in each of four pens in two commercial beef deep-bedded mono-slope facilities (BDMF). Areas of high NH3 concentration occurred randomly throughout the pens. Ammonia concentration increased as pack and ambient air temperature increased. Concentration of VOC was highest in transition areas between the bedded pack and the concrete floor. Depth, moisture content, and pH of the bedded pack did not influence concentration of NH3 and VOC. Nutrient composition of the manure/bedding material in BDMF is similar to manure in open feedlots, except that in BDMF the volatile solids content is much higher. E. coli concentrations can occur at high levels in BDMF and vary with differences in ambient temperature. Priority should be given to NH3 and E. coli mitigation during hot months. However, locationspecific NH3 mitigation will not be effective due to the random distribution of NH3 in the pen. Frequent cleaning of the area surrounding the bedded pack should reduce VOC concentration.

The declining share of beef in total U.S. meat consumption has motivated industry-wide efforts to improve average beef quality through more effective coordination among the various market participants. Increased use of explicit grid pricing mechanisms over the last decade represent initial efforts at improved coordination. More recent efforts include animal-specific carcass data collection, wit...

This publication uses national, quarterly data to examine U.S. meat demand using the Rotterdam model. The analysis provides insights into beef demand and previously unexamined topics including the effect of multiple information indices linking different health concerns with diet, changes in household dynamics, and meat recall information. Estimation results confirmed that consumer expenditures ...
متن کامل2011 Alpharma Beef Cattle Nutrition Symposium:enhancing beef production efficiency with new knowledge and technologies: building the bridges for future collaboration.
The beef cattle industry relies on the utilization of high forage diets to maintain the cow herd, develop replacement females, and stocker operations. Forage quantity and quality fluctuate with season and environmental conditions. Depending on the class and physiological state of the animal, a grazed forage diet may not always meet nutritional requirements resulting in low ADG or weight loss if...

As global populations and affluence rise, there is increasing demand for energy, animal protein, and construction materials. In many cases, available resource pools are insufficient to meet growing market demands, resulting in increased prices and competition for limited resources. This study evaluates key construction resources needed to build different types and scales of Iowa swine productio...
